How to Bet on Moneylines
Moneyline betting is the first thing we teach novices in our Online Betting 101 guide. Read on to learn what it means and how to place moneyline bets.
Moneyline Betting 101
A moneyline bet is a simple prediction on the team that will win a game. It also relates to the player that will win a tennis match or a golf tournament, the driver that will win a race or the boxer or MMA star that will win a fight.
The top sports betting sites have their own teams of oddsmakers. They will assess the upcoming sports event and decide which team is stronger. That team is the favorite, and its opponent is the underdog.
You will see moneyline odds on either team. The odds tell you how much profit you will earn by betting on that team, and they also imply how strong each team’s chances of winning the game are.
Moneyline Betting Example
The LA Rams were the -180 favorites to win Super Bowl 56 and the Cincinnati Bengals were the +155 underdogs.
That told you to expect a $100 profit for every $180 wagered on the Rams if they succeeded in winning the game. It also told you to expect a $155 profit for every $100 wagered on the Bengals if they prevailed.
It implied a win probability of 64.3% for the Rams and 39.2% for the Bengals. The figures do not add up to 100% because the sportsbooks build a house edge into their moneylines.
Placing a Moneyline Bet
You just need to decide which team you think will win and place your bet accordingly. Click on the team you have decided upon and it will pop up on the betslip.
Type in your bet amount, and the slip will inform you of the profit you will earn if that team wins the game. You can then confirm the bet if you are happy with it.
